300 PAINTINGS

Upcoming Performances

McCarter Theatre
October 29 – November 2, 2025

In 2021, Sydney comedian Sam Kissajukian decided to quit standup, rent an abandoned cake factory, and become a painter. Over the course of a six-month manic episode, he created 300 large-scale paintings, unknowingly documenting his mental state through the process. In this hilarious, fascinating, and wildly original show, Kissajukian brings audiences on a rollercoaster ride that explores the ties between art, mental health, and creativity.

Following its celebrated run at the Vineyard Theatre this fall, the show returns with a curated exhibition of Sam’s acclaimed artwork in Vineyard Theatre’s lobby spaces, which audiences are invited to tour before and after the show.

Sam Kissajukian

Sam (39) who lives in Sydney had been working professionally as a stand-up comedian for twelve years until he became disillusioned by his career and quit. In June 2021, in the seclusion of an old cake factory, Sam experienced a six month manic episode followed by a debilitating five month depressive episode. In May 2022, he was diagnosed with Bipolar. Since seeking treatment, Sam’s life was transformed by his new found stability. After a year hiatus, Sam began performing again in September 2022. He created the theatre show “300 Paintings” as a way to tell his story, fusing comedy and visual art to explore the Bipolar mind.

Intending to perform the show only once, the show won a major festival award, which sparked invitations to perform the show at festivals, theatres and arts institutions in Australia and the UK where it won a further nine high profile awards. This run of shows culminated in 2024 at New York’s Vineyard Theatre for 80 nights where it was nominated for four theatre awards for Best Solo performance.

Sam is also an accomplished visual artist, with a full time painting practice producing bold exhibitions with a comedic bent that explore the ineffable mental states of Bipolar. Over the last four years he’s held solo exhibitions at prestigious galleries, arts institutions and theatres across all five major Australian cities, Edinburgh and New York. In 2024 he won ‘Best Solo Exhibition’ at the Adelaide Fringe.
